Call for Nominations ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award

Each year, a department is allowed to nominate one Ph.D. thesisproduced in that department. The nomination must be made by the chairof the department and must be accompanied by three supporting lettersfrom researchers in the field, clearly specifying the contributions ofthe thesis and the potential impact on software systems. (If thedepartment chair is the thesis advisor of the nominee, then anothersenior faculty member in the department must make the nomination.) Thethesis must have been defended successfully at most two years beforethe conference at which the award will be presented. AnEnglish-language version of the thesis must accompany thenomination. The Award Committee will determine if the thesis is withinscope for the award. The thesis may be nominated simultaneously forother awards, such as the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award.

Each nomination involves several components:Julian Shun has won ACM's for , in which he proposes new techniques for writing scalable parallel programs that run efficiently both in theory and in practice. His three-pronged approach includes proposing tools and techniques for deterministic parallel programming; the introduction of Ligra, the first high-level shared-memory framework for parallel graph traversal algorithms; and presenting new algorithms for a variety of important problems on graphs and strings.

Shun is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University, which nominated him for this award. He will receive the Doctoral Dissertation Award and its $20,000 prize at the annual ACM Awards Banquet on June 11 in San Francisco.

PJ Narayanan, professor and dean at IIIT, Hyderabad. As president of the ACM India Council, he helped establish an ACM presence in this burgeoning technology mecca. His efforts were instrumental in launching ACM as a scholarly society and starting several activities under the ACM banner in India. He facilitated top conferences in the region and encouraged students to pursue careers in computing. Narayanan helped create an ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2012.
